Is Bottled Water a Quality Choice?

When you pick up some bottled water at the grocery store or convenience store, you are probably assuming that the water you just purchased is of higher quality than your home tap water.

It turns out that there are no government standards that require bottled water to be any better, purer, or safer than tap water! In addition, regulations from the Food and Drug Administration do not govern the 60-70% of water products that are bottled and sold within the same state.

Read the article below to learn more about water quality testing that is never done for most bottled water products...

The Risks

From the 1999 report “Bottled Water, Pure Drink or Pure Hype”, published by the National Resources Defense Council, there are four key tests that are required for city tap water, which most bottled water never sees.

1. Testing for E-coli or fecal coliform bacteria

City tap water cannot have any confirmed bateria of this type. The FDA rules for bottled water allows a certain amount of coliform bacteria to be present.

2. Filtration and Disinfection

Many city water supplies come from surface water sources, and are required to be filtered and disinfected. The federal bottled water regulations do not have requirements for filtration and disinfection.

3. Test for water borne diseases

Most cities that draw from surface water supplies test for water borne disease sources such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium. These cause intestinal illness such as diarrhea. Again, the FDA rules do not require these types of tests for bottled water.

4. Meet standards for limits to toxic or cancer causing chemicals

Federal standards for water quality set allowable limits for toxic or cancer causing chemicals. Under FDA regulations, bottled water is exempt from meeting these allowable limits for undesirable chemicals.

As you reach for your bottle of water, the reality is that you are paying a premium price for your drink ($1-$4 per gallon in some cases) while having no assurance of the water quality.

The Better Choice

Fortunately, you do have a choice! Home water treatment systems can provide very high quality and great tasting water at a fraction of the cost of bottled water.

Multi-stage home filtration systems made by Aquasana provide great quality water at a very reasonable cost.
